Sharp as a snakebite, Sundial is a gripping novel about the secrets we bury from the ones we love most, by Catriona Ward, the author o f The Last House on Needless Street. I would rank Last House as being more memorable than anything by Hill, Buehlman or Nick Cutter- and I like all their stuff.“DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK. Night forever because he made people fall in love with reversals?Īnyways, I've just been surprised by the 50/50 response to her here. Don't we want surprise? Is everyone just going to be mad at M. I'm not sure why people are so upset by the twists and turns. And if film doesn't count, what about all the main characters in Vandermeer's Annihilation? Aren't they each sort of little disturbing figures/symbolic types for us readers to project onto? They're don't have Shakespearean contours. What about Psycho or Vertigo? Is Janet Leigh's character amazing? Or Jimmy Stewart's in Vertigo? Aren't both arresting in ways that are hard for an audience(us) to pin down and we get sucked into an uncanny situation, an oddly framed set-up that gives you a sense of being pulled into a whirlpool.

Fulci's The Beyond or City of Living Dead work brilliantly but you never think about characters at all. Some(more than some) people on Reddit are knocking her characters but Horror is both simpler, stranger, weirder and more unpredictable than 'full 'or 'rounded' characters. I listened to Paul Tremblay bow down to Catriona in an interview and he meant it.

Joe Hill called Last House a masterpiece and he's an expert on this shit too. He called Barker being super important for years to come and he was. right? At least as far as 'popular' fiction/media goes. If you ever have gone out of your way to check out King's recs he always means it and dare I say it. I mean, Stephen King's shout out for Last House is one of his strongest ever.
